“Wyrmwood: Apocalypse” is a 2021 Australian action-horror film directed by Kiah Roache-Turner. The film stars Luke McKenzie, Shantae Barnes-Cowan, Jake Ryan, Bianca Bradey, and Jay Gallagher. It is a sequel to 2014’s “Wyrmwood”.
The film is set in a zombie-infested Australian wasteland. The story follows soldier Rhys who has dedicated his life to tracking and capturing survivors for the Surgeon General in hopes of finding a cure. The film takes Rhys on an arc of redemption as he turns against his evil bosses to join forces with a group of rebel survivors to help save a little girl’s mother from death at the hands of the military.
The film was released theatrically in Australia on February 17, 2022. It has a running time of 88 minutes. The film grossed a total of US$263,293 at the worldwide box office.
The film received generally favorable reviews. The film review website Metacritic gave it a weighted average score of 62 out of 100. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a score of 87%. However, individual reviews varied. For instance, Lena Wilson of the New York Times praised the film for its quick-witted script. On the other hand, The Guardian’s Luke Buckmaster described the film as a “perversely colourful, visually energetic and proudly splatterific sequel” to its 2015 predecessor.
