"The Communion Girl" is a Spanish horror film that was released in 2023. The film was directed by Víctor Garcia. The screenplay was written by Guillem Clua, based on an original story by Garcia and Alberto Marini.
The story is set in May 1987. Friends Sara and Rebe are on their way back home from a night out with recreational drugs following the first communion of Sara's younger sister Judith. They find a doll on the road. From that moment, their lives become a living nightmare. The movie features an ensemble cast including Carla Campra, Aina Quiñones, Marc Soler, and Carlos Oviedo. The film was presented at the 55th Sitges Film Festival on 14 October 2022 and was theatrically released in Spain on 10 February 2023. It is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video with Shudder add-on.
The film has received mixed reviews, with an IMDb rating of 5.3/10. Despite its convincing period setting and authentic characters, some critics felt that the shocks weren't especially chilling and the sense of claustrophobic entrapment in the milieu was undermined by a cop-out open ending.
