"The Wolverine" is a 2013 superhero film directed by James Mangold and is the sixth installment in the "X-Men" film series. It is a standalone sequel to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" (2009) and serves as a direct follow-up to the events of "X-Men: The Last Stand" (2006).
Set after the events of "X-Men: The Last Stand," the film follows Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman) as he travels to Japan at the invitation of an old acquaintance, Yashida, whom he saved during World War II. Yashida offers Wolverine the chance to relinquish his immortality and mortality through a procedure that would transfer Wolverine's healing abilities to Yashida, who is now dying.
However, when Yashida's granddaughter, Mariko (played by Tao Okamoto), is targeted by the Yakuza and other mysterious forces, Wolverine finds himself drawn into a conspiracy and must use his abilities to protect her while confronting his own inner demons.
"The Wolverine" received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its darker tone, character development, and action sequences set in Japan. The film was a commercial success, grossing over $414 million worldwide. It was followed by the third Wolverine film, "Logan," released in 2017.
