"Allegiant" (2016) is a science fiction action film directed by Robert Schwentke, based on the third book in Veronica Roth's "Divergent" series.
The film stars Shailene Woodley as Tris Prior, Theo James as Four, Jeff Daniels as David, and Naomi Watts as Evelyn.
Following the revelations in "Insurgent," Tris and Four lead a group of friends as they escape beyond the wall enclosing Chicago to discover the truth about their society. Outside, they encounter a highly advanced society led by David (Jeff Daniels), the head of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare. David reveals that their city was an experiment aimed at correcting human genetic damage and that Tris, being Divergent, holds the key to the future of humanity.
As Tris begins to trust David and learns more about the world beyond the wall, Four becomes increasingly suspicious of David's true intentions. Tensions rise as they uncover a deeper conspiracy involving genetic manipulation and the Bureau's control over Chicago. Meanwhile, back in the city, Evelyn and Johanna struggle for power, pushing the factions towards civil war.
"Allegiant" explores themes of trust, freedom, and the ethical implications of genetic engineering. The film received mixed-to-negative reviews, with criticism aimed at its storyline, special effects, and deviation from the source material. Despite the star power and performances, particularly Woodley's, it was less successful at the box office compared to its predecessors. The mixed reception and financial underperformance led to the cancellation of the planned final installment, "Ascendant," and its potential TV adaptation.
