Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a 2021 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character Shang-Chi.
Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film had its world premiere at the El Capitan Theatre and TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on August 16, 2021, and was screened at CinemaCon on August 25.
The film was released in international markets beginning on September 1, and had been released in 66% of its markets by the end of its first weekend. The film was released in the United States on September 3, in over 4,200 theaters, of which 400 were IMAX, over 850 were premium large format, 1,500 were 3D, and an additional 275 were the D-Box, 4DX, and ScreenX formats. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is part of Phase Four of the MCU.
The film received various accolades, including a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the 94th Academy Awards. It also won several awards, including the Vanguard Award at Unforgettable Gala's 19th Annual Asian American Awards. By December 2021, development on a sequel had begun with Cretton returning to write and direct. Liu was also expected to return as Shang-Chi by the following month.
