 The Little Hours is a 2017 American medieval black comedy film written and directed by Jeff Baena.



 The story follows the lives of three nuns at a convent in the countryside who try to fornicate with a young gardener posing as a deaf-mute after he escapes from being punished by his lord for adultery with the man's wife. The film is loosely based on the first and second stories of day three of Giovanni Boccaccio's 14th-century collection of novellas, The Decameron.


The film features an ensemble cast including Alison Brie, Dave Franco, Kate Micucci, Aubrey Plaza, John C. Reilly, and Molly Shannon. The screenplay was improvised, and the sets were accurate to the medieval period. Filming locations included towns in the Tuscan province of Lucca, with the castle scene filmed in Fosdinovo, Province of Massa Carrara. Dan Romer composed the film's score.


The Little Hours had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2017. Gunpowder & Sky acquired distribution rights, and it was released on June 30, 2017. The film received positive reviews from critics, with praise for the cast's performances. It holds a 78% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 128 reviews, with a weighted average of 6.5/10. The film also holds a rating of 69 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on 29 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews."


The Little Hours grossed a total of $1,647,175, opening in two theaters on its opening weekend and grossing $61,560. The film is available to stream on Hulu and rent or buy on various platforms such as Fandango at Home and Prime Video.
