Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a 2024 Australian post-apocalyptic action film directed and produced by George Miller.
It is the fifth installment in Miller's Mad Max franchise, and serves as a prequel and spin-off to the 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road, focusing on the origins of the character Furiosa.
Set 15-20 years before the events of Fury Road, the film follows a young Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, as she is kidnapped by the forces of warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and eventually rises to become an Imperator. The film also stars Alyla Browne as the child version of Furiosa, and Tom Burke as Praetorian Jack, a military commander who befriends Furiosa.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga had its world premiere in 2024 and was released theatrically in Australia, the US, and other markets in May-June 2024. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised the story, action sequences, and performances, particularly from Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth. However, it was a box office disappointment, grossing around the same as its $168 million budget.
The film features a similar visual style and world-building as Fury Road, while taking a more episodic, character-driven approach compared to that film's relentless chase structure. Director George Miller has said he intended Furiosa to be a companion piece that retroactively enriches the Mad Max mythology.
