Banana Joe (1982) is a lighthearted Italian-German comedy directed by Stefano Vanzina (better known as Steno) and starring Bud Spencer. The film is set in South America, where Banana Joe, a strong but kind-hearted man, lives in a rainforest village on the island of Amantido. He supports the community by bartering bananas for goods and acts as a father figure to the local children.
His peaceful life is disrupted when a local mobster tries to take control of the banana trade. To protect his livelihood and his village, Joe is forced to leave the jungle and venture into the city for the first time. There, he faces bureaucratic hurdles, shady businessmen, and comic misadventures, all while staying true to his simple, honest nature.
The movie is remembered for its libertarian undertones and Bud Spencer’s warm, humorous performance. While critics gave it mixed reviews, audiences embraced its charm, making it one of Spencer’s most iconic solo films.
