Rebel (2022) is a Belgian-French-Luxembourg drama directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the filmmaking duo also known for Bad Boys for Life and Batgirl. The film explores the struggles of a Muslim family torn apart by war, ideology, and the future of its youngest member.
The story centers on Kamal, who leaves Belgium to help war victims in Syria but finds himself forced to join an armed group. His younger brother Nassim, left behind, becomes vulnerable to radical influences, while their mother Leila desperately tries to protect him. Through this family’s ordeal, the film examines themes of identity, extremism, and the emotional toll of conflict.
Technically, Rebel features cinematography by Robrecht Heyvaert, editing by Frédéric Thoraval, and music by Hannes De Maeyer. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 26, 2022, and was later released in France and Belgium. With a runtime of 135 minutes, it grossed about $173,000 worldwide. Despite modest box office returns, it received strong critical acclaim, holding a 7.3/10 rating on IMDb and 91/100 on Rotten Tomatoes
